The staff at John Muir is committed to providing safe and caring environments in which all learners can achieve academic and personal growth and responsible citizenship. The staff works in conjunction with students and parents to ensure that the school is a safe, supportive, challenging, and caring environment in which all students can enjoy success.                       

Students, Staff, Parents, and Guests to John Muir Elementary have rights.

• We have the Right to learn.

• We have the Right to be safe.

• We have the Right to hear and be heard.

• We have the Right to be respected.

• We have the Right to physical and emotional well-being.

• We have the Right to a clean, healthy environment.   

To make sure that all of our rights are met students, staff, parents, and guests of John Muir Elementary are RESPONSIBLE for ensuring our school is a safe and caring environment.

At John Muir Elementary we provide a safe and caring school environment.                                                                      Our bottom lines are:

  • No harassment, threat, or intimidation
  • No violence
  • No discrimination (according to the BC Human Rights Code)
  • No theft
  • No vandalism

Safe and caring school environments do not tolerate the presence of:

  • Intoxicating substances
  • Intruders or trespassers

Students at John Muir Elementary school will not discriminate against others from the below listed prohibited areas:

  • race,
  • colour,
  • ancestry,
  • place of origin,
  • religion,
  • marital status,
  • family status,
  • physical or mental disability,
  • sex,
  • sexual orientation, and
  • age

Safe and caring school environments do not tolerate the presence of:

  • Intoxicating substances
  • Intruders or trespassers

   Behavior Goals

At John Muir Elementary School we show consideration, courtesy, and respect to others and their property, and move, work, and play safely.

These expectations are reflected in the following behaviors:

  • keeping hands and feet to oneself
  • using appropriate language
  • showing respect to all students, adults, and property
  • acting in a safe manner

Should these expectations not be observed, actions taken may include:

  • a conference with all parties affected
  • restitution including opportunities to fix mistakes
  • notification of parents
  • brainstorming to solve problems
  • removal from classroom, playground, or privileges
  • extended removal from classroom and/or playground privileges
